Multi-Channel Fast Ethernet vs. Gigabit

A common question, "Why should I buy a multi-channel 10/100 Ethernet card with port aggregation, when Gigabit Ethernet adapters are readily available at comparable prices?" The simplest answer is price and performance.

Economic Benefits

From a cost perspective, users of PhobosLink Software can continue to use their current network infrastructure:

CAT 5 cabling
10/100 Network Interface Cards ("NIC")
Unintelligent 10/100 Ethernet switches and even hubs.
With the cost of Gigabit NICs coming down, the real savings is realized in the procurement of the Gigabit switches that range between $3500 to over $20,000 for load balancing and port aggregation (trunking) capable equipment. The cost of which needless to say, is prohibitive in many circumstances.

With PhobosLink, Network Administrators can use already existing equipment. PhobosLink supports both Cisco FastEtherchannel (FEC) enabled switches, as well as unintelligent switches and even hubs. PhobosLink supports a variety of trunking algorithms, and can be custom configured based on network hardware.

Performance Benefits

The performance of many Gigabit and Fast Ethernet cards today (without naming manufacturers) range from 30% to 60% of rated wire speed. Simply, actual throughput is not 10x that of 100Base-Tx in many circumstances. You truly get what you pay for.

AEI's Quad Fast Ethernet adapter, when run with PhobosLink Software, actually outperforms a large number of Gigabit NICs on the market today (Mier article). If one so chooses, multiple P430s (up to 32 channels) may be installed in a server, and trunked forming one logical link. The bandwidth from the server-to-switch, where most network bottlenecks occur, is subsequently increased well into the multi-Gigabit range. Perfect for use in firewalls, servers supporting multiple LAN environments, Storage Area Networks, power users, web hosting, and more.

Combined with the network management benefits of Priority Trunking, Active Port Failover, and Dynamic Load Balancing... AEI's solution provides many Network Administrators the flexibility, manageability, and performance they demand.

PhobosLink Port Aggregation, Priority Trunking, Failover, and Dynamic Load Balancing are all supported under Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet standards, 32-/64-bit or 33/66 MHz slots, as well as the new PCI-X standard, and all popular processors.
